First catamaran: Lagoon 40 or Lagoon 42?

Lagoon 40 vs Lagoon 42 for a first catamaran purchase: programme, budget, living space, offshore performance.

The Lagoon 40 and the Lagoon 42 are the builder’s entry-level and core models. For a first catamaran purchase, the choice between the two comes down to four concrete criteria, which we explore here with our Sailoé field experience.

1. Main programme

Lagoon 40 = a couple or a 2+2 family on short cruises (1-3 weeks, 200-500 miles). Lagoon 42 = a 2+4 family or a group of friends, longer programmes with offshore passages possible.

2. Purchase and maintenance budget

A new Lagoon 40 = EUR 380,000 base. A new Lagoon 42 = EUR 480,000. Used at 6-8 years, the respective budgets are EUR 280,000 and 380,000. Annual maintenance costs are +15% on the 42.

3. Living space and berths

The 40 = 6 people comfortably (4 double cabins), the 42 = 8 people (4 double cabins plus 2 guest cabins).

4. Performance and offshore capability

The 42 is livelier to windward and has greater fuel and water autonomy reserves for the transatlantic.
