Preparing a Lagoon 42 for the Atlantic crossing: the Sailoé checklist

The Sailoé checklist to prepare a Lagoon 42 for the Canaries to Caribbean transatlantic. Sails, power, provisioning, safety.

The Canaries to Caribbean transatlantic is 2,800 nautical miles, around 18-22 days under the trade winds. On a Lagoon 42 it is comfortable, but it demands precise preparation. Here is the checklist we apply at Sailoé for every owner delivery passage.

Sails

Check the condition of the mainsail and genoa seams. If they have more than two seasons of use under intense UV, send them to the sailmaker for minor repairs. Carry a storm jib and a storm staysail.

Power

2 solar panels of 200W minimum plus a D400 wind generator on a gantry. A 600Ah AGM or lithium service bank. A 60L/h watermaker is essential. Allow 60L of water per day for 4 people while sailing, 100L at anchor.

Transatlantic provisioning

Allow 25 days of supplies for a safety margin. Tinned food, rice, pasta and pulses as a base. Fridge limited to the first 7 days. Mainly 1.5L water bottles, a safety reserve independent of the watermaker.
